Curriculum and Assessment

Key Stage 3 Curriculum

Our Key Stage 3 programme is taught over Years 7 and 8.

Students are set in core subjects (Maths, English and Science). We group students roughly according to their starting points by looking at a range of sources such as KS2 data, Cognitive Ability Tests (CATs) done on entry, and teacher assessment. With the inevitable disapplication of levels we are working towards creating a skills-based, five year scheme of work for each subject. This will allow all students, from Year 7 onwards, to be aware of the skills they require to achieve their GCSE targets.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum

We arrange Key Stage 4 over Years 9, 10 and 11.

We aim to allow students to obtain between 8 and 11 GCSEs or equivalent, dependent on which pathway they are in.

We recommend and encourage students to follow one of the four pathways, A, B, C, or D (below) which are designed to provide the appropriate levels of support and challenge.

The vast majority of our students will study 3 option subjects between Years 9 and 11. Students will take GCSE English Language, GSCE English Literature, GCSE RE, GCSE Mathematics and GCSE Statistics. Additionally, all of our students will be doing the reformed GCSEs in combined Sciences or an equivalent.

Pathway A (The EBacc Route)

This route is for our most academically able students. They will be guided towards taking either Geography or History and a Modern Foreign Language. This will then meet the standards required for the English Baccalaureate (EBacc).

Pathway B

Students will choose three additional options from a free range of subjects.  Students in this pathway can also follow the EBacc route if they choose a Humanities subject and a language.

Pathway C and Pathway D

Students in this pathway will choose two options.  Instead of a third option they will be given additional time to improve their literacy and/or numeracy skills which will help them to access the rest of the curriculum.

In some subjects, students will be guided towards BTEC courses, which will give them a greater chance of success in vocational areas. These courses are equal to GCSE grades A*–C and provide pathways to vocational courses in college and University.
