Drama

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-8)

At KS3 Drama enables students to develop and express ideas and concepts which will help them make sense of reality. Drama is a life skill and a creative art form that helps pupils develop their ability to use voice, movement and gesture in acting, mime and improvisation. They can express and manage their thoughts and feelings while working in a safe environment. The development of these skills encourages self awareness and self confidence. Assessment is primarily through performance work and there is opportunity to share work across the cohort.

Key Stage 4 (Years 9-11)

At KS4 Drama is more focussed on practitioners and styles of theatre. Students learn about acting styles such as Stanislavski and Brecht and work primarily from texts in exploring themes and concepts. Assessment is both performance and written. Students take 3 exams; Unit 1 is a devised performance from a stimulus which has a written controlled assessment element (1500 words); Unit 2 which is a performance from a published text; Unit 3 which is a timed written exam.

Extra-Curricular Activities

This year Forest Gate Theatre Company will be staging Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in July 2016. There are also plans to take part in the International Youth Arts Festival, also in July with the possibility of joining the Shakespeare Schools Festival in November.

Intervention

Because of the nature of Drama and the fact that you are being assessed almost continually through performance, we are able to identify students with particular needs early on in the course. Extra practical sessions are held and students are encouraged to join the theatre company. We also run extra-curricular coursework sessions throughout the year.

Results

2015 saw the best ever results for GCSE drama at Forest Gate. 90% of students achieved an A* - C in drama with unprecedented Unit grades (17 of 29 students achieved an A-A* at Unit 1 whilst 15 achieved an A-A* at Unit 2).

Forest Gate currently take the WJEC board examinations which are much more suited to the performing strengths of our students.
