Key Stage 3 (Years 7-8)

At Key Stage 3, students will now be following the new AQA English curriculum with an assessment at the end of each module which tests skills in line with the new assessment objectives. One key change is that students must now analyse, evaluate and compare a range of sources from the non-fiction genre from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Here they will be introduced to a range of sources such as letters, articles, biographies, speeches, accounts, travel writing and many more. They will be challenged to explain why the writer has decided to make certain choices with their language and structure. Developing writing skills also plays an integral role in KS3 English; students will learn a range of effective strategies to write descriptively and persuasively for a particular audience and purpose. As well as preparing them for their GCSE exams, this will provide them key life skills for the wider world.

For literature, students will interact with a wide range of interesting and thought-provoking novels, plays and poetry from different periods of history. Each year they will study one key Shakespeare play, a piece of modern drama, a range of extracts from 19th century fiction and a variety of poems relating to conflict. These texts allow them to develop key skills in making individual interpretations of writers’ ideas, analysing language and structure and making confident links between the texts and the social and historical context in which they were produced. Students will  be targeted and supported using ‘non-negotiable’ checklists to help students’ confidence with language and literature skills to prepare them going into KS4.

Key Stage 4 (Years 9-11)

Current Year 11

At Key Stage 4, the Year 11 students will continue to prepare for their final examinations in GCSE English Language and English Literature in summer 2016.  All students will complete a range of Controlled Assessments and have regular exam skills practice in preparation for final exams.  Students will also be targeted and supported using ‘non-negotiable’ checklists to help students’ confidence with exam responses. For their English Literature exam students will be studying and analysing ‘Of Mice and Men’, ‘An Inspector Calls’ and poems from the AQA Conflict cluster.

Current Year 10

Students in Year 10 will be the first cohort to sit the new AQA English Language and English Literature. GCSE grades will be solely based on exam performance, and as a result, class time will be spent developing students’ confidence with both examinations. For English Language, students will practise analysing unseen texts and writing for a variety of purposes and genres. For English Literature, students will be studying and analysing ‘An Inspector Calls’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’ as well as a variety of poems that explore ideas around conflict and power.

Current Year 9

Students studying the new AQA specification will continue their KS3 preparation towards a GCSE in English Language and English Literature, building on and consolidating their skills.  They will develop analysis, evaluation and comparative skills, being required to critically analyse writers’ choices in language and structure.  As well as this, writing to describe and persuade will continue to be developed.  Literature preparation will continue to build on analytical and evaluative skills, drawing on social and historical contexts, language choices and structure.

Extra-Curricular Activities

Our students have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of exciting and educational activities outside of school hours. Our ‘Debate Mate Club' is hosted by experienced volunteers and hones students’ persuasive and oration skills both in school and at inter-school competitions. Our students’ creative writing are nurtured through the ‘First Story’ programme in workshops with professional performance poets. Our head teacher and deputy head teacher run a weekly ‘Short Story Club’ younger more able readers in which they can share the experience of analysing and interpreting challenging texts.

The mentoring programme in Forest Gate also includes dedicated reading time for our students once per week which provides much needed quiet time to enjoy reading for pleasure. We also ensure that all our students have a solid understanding of essential spelling, punctuation and grammar necessary for academic success through weekly literacy quizzes.
